Execute The Executioner

It seems that most of the Jack stations are either flat or down. There's a lot of chatter about "What now? What next? Jocks? How long will they give it?" Etc.

I personally expect many of the Jacks to fail.

I just hope that after they're dead and gone... after they've flipped... after the dust has settled... after countless staffers have been hired and fired, shuffled and shuffled again...

...I hope the powers that be realize the problem was the execution, not the format.

I'd like to point out that I'm not talking about the fact that some of these stations have been on the air for over six months without PDs. That's ignorant - but it's not the problem. The problem is radio that isn't entertaining, as determined by local listeners. Key words there: Entertain, and Local.

Some markets find Jack entertaining. Others, not so much. Golly gee... different markets, different tastes and preferences. Who knew?

"Taking an idea that worked in Vancouver B.C. and executing it as cheaply as possible in Chicago isn't how you entertain listeners in New York City. Don't kill the format. Execute the executioner."

I keep hoping the lesson will finally be learned that each market is unique. Instead, we keep seeing broadcasting companies seek national answers for local problems.

Free FM is a giant arrow with white strobe lights and neon trim pointing to an even bigger sign that says "WRONG WAY."

Why would Infinity change the name of an established station in Dallas so it can match the newly changed name of a station they own in Detroit? No FM signal can travel a thousand miles, thus the change has nothing to do with Dallas or Detroit.

In fact, this marks the third name for their station in Dallas. Three names in six years is not how you build heritage guys.

Taking an idea that worked in Vancouver B.C. and executing it as cheaply as possible in Chicago isn't how you entertain listeners in New York City either.

Maybe Minneapolis and Los Angeles aren't so similar after all (wink).

Don't kill the format. Execute the executioner.

Think About It:

  • Bogus Job Openings:   It's as true in broadcasting as it is in so many parts of the business world: getting a job is less about 'applying' for a job and more about marketing yourself for one.

  • Jack's Back:   What do people really want from a radio station? The answer to that question frustrates me beyond belief because it's so obvious.

  • Technology: Friend Or Foe?:   The onslaught of digital media players is a giant strobing neon arrow shaped sign pointing to change for those who view music as their bread and butter.
