ISay NO To HD

This was inspired by a complaint about stations jumping on the HD bandwagon. As if radio needs to be broadcasting in HD.

Not that I'm against it... but radio has far more pressing needs right now. Radio needs to rediscover the people that listen to it. Radio needs to build passion for the medium again! What radio does NOT need is H freaking D. Certainly not yet.

Get to know people outside the industry for christ sake!

She's 19, driving to class at the local community college. She's super excited because she's got a hot date after class. Well, it might be a hot date. She's hopeful anyway. She's bobbing her head along to the radio as she drives along. She doesn't care about HD.

He's 37, driving home from a long day in the cube farm. He never thought he'd be strapped to a desk, and certainly not one without a real office! He's tired and he just wants cool tunes for the drive and maybe to hear his favorite jock crack him up. He doesn't care about HD.

She's 45, and she's a new empty-nester. She never imagined a day without the kids around. OK, she imagined it, but she didn't imaging it feeling so lonely. She's got the radio on to fill the emptiness until her husband gets back from running an errand. She doesn't care about HD.

He's 15 and he's angry. It's just typical youth stuff, but to him it feels real. He feels as if the world is out to get him - to hold him down with its rules and restrictions. If only he were 16 things would be different! Or so he tells himself. He's listening to his favorite station because the girl on the radio sounds angry too. He doesn't care about HD.

Think About It:

  • What It Takes:   I'm tired of hearing people complain about how hard it is to find a job in radio, and that these jobs don't pay. Flame me all you want, but think about it first: With no college degree and no ambition - what the heck did you expect?

  • Know Your Core:   Countless heritage CHR's are gone today because they were either stupid, stubborn, or both. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say. CHR is not a 25-54 format anymore. You play that game and a more focussed station will win.
