IHeart The Box

This blog is a collection of things I've written about broadcasting as well as a place to continue to do so. Most of the posts pertain to radio, but that may change over time.

Why all this talk about a box?

I'm just poking a little fun at overused catch-phrases and the people who use them. You know the type... the ones always taking it to the next level while making it happen via win win dynamic synergies. I hate that crap. It seems that people who say such things rarely even know what they themselves are talking about.

My least favorite expression is "think outside the box."

"Laying down the law is essential. Embracing new technology is important. Seeking out new ideas is imperative. But for the love of god, make sure you cover the basics first."

People are trying so hard to think outside the box these days that they've completely forgotten what the box actually is. This is certainly true in the media.

The FCC clamps down on indecency while failing to establish what indecency is. Well FUCK YOU! Oh wait - that was indecent. But it wasn't indecent when Bono shouted the term "Fucking Brilliant" on national TV?

Get back in the box.

There's a radio station in town that is touting their move to broadcasting in "HD." As if the 22 year old female that is their core gives a rats ass. Meanwhile, their on air processing sounds so miserable that the station is hard to listen to.

Get back in the box.

Laying down the law is essential. Embracing new technology is important. Seeking out new ideas is imperative. But for the love of god, make sure you excel at the basics first.

Think About It:

  • Watering Down Your Beer:   Neither radio nor beer became this watered down garbage overnight. It happened over a period of decades, so it was hard for the untrained ear/tastes to detect the changes.

  • How To Prosper In Radio:   We all know the importance of showprep. What about career-prep? What are you doing today to benefit your career a year from now?

  • An Open Letter To The RIAA:   Walk into any high school in America and ask kids what they want. They're already speaking. They have been for years. It is time to listen.
