Got Any Change?
Darwin said: "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."
So true.
Change is inevitable. It certainly seems to me that those who cannot cope with change are more likely to find themselves weeded out of the business. We see it everyday. People talk about the old days as if it is all they know. Tell me all you want about 1963, 1984 or 1945.... I've got the year 2004 looking me square in the face. Times have changed, and 2004 is where I will find the world I have to succeed in NOW.
Many of those who have been weeded out have chosen their fate and simply refuse to admit it. They don't network. They aren't willing to move where the jobs are. They send out a tape a month & wonder why they never hear anything. They only send out tapes in response to want ads from bogus EEO resume collectors. They don't listen to their own work with an open enough mind to realize that they don't measure up, or that their demo doesn't reflect their talent level. Instead, they place the blame on others. And worse: one particular person emailed me privately and told me that he was never a very good jock. Get a clue! If you're not a great teacher, do I want you teaching my kids? If you're not a very good mechanic, do I want you working on my car?
As for those who do have the talent:
Find the greatness within yourself and use it. Light a fire under your own ass and excell in every way. Forget about how much experience you have. Who cares? Times have changed.
Find out how much you have to LEARN. Therein lies your power... What you did yesterday is gone. Your power lies in what you will do better tomorrow. It's easy to walk into a market and kick the ass of a guy living in yesterday. But challenging a visionary who can bring his or her vision to life? THAT can be a nightmare. It can also be the most rewarding experience of your career - win or lose.
